Week of activities in September includes resource fair, safety walk and more

GALLUP, N.M. — The University of New Mexico-��ѹ���һ�������� will host a week of activities in September in observance of National Campus Safety Awareness Month to focus on making the branch campus a safer and healthier place.

UNM-��ѹ���һ��������’s Campus Safety Week is scheduled Monday, Sept. 15, through Friday, Sept. 19. Events throughout the week are designed to bring more awareness and education to safety- and security-related topics that affect UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� students, faculty and staff, as well as the larger community that UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� is a part of.

Another highlight of the week is the Campus Safety Walk. Members of the UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� community are invited to go on a group walk around the campus to identify safety issues or concerns, such as the need for better lighting or pruning overgrown vegetation.

The Campus Safety Walk is a great opportunity for participants to get some steps in after dark with other Lobos while providing valuable input. This year, the UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� Staff Council plans to give away promotional flashlights to participants.

Campus Safety Week Agenda

Monday, Sept. 15

ALICE Training

10 a.m. – Noon, Location: SSTC 200

The ��ѹ���һ�������� Police Department will provide practical steps in an Active Shooter situation to increase survival by encouraging awareness, communication, and proactive decision-making, rather than relying solely on lockdown.

Campus Office Safety

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Location: SSTC 200

Join us for an open discussion on safety in your personal office space and within your office suite. Are you prepared with a plan in case of an emergency? This event is open to all who wish to attend.

Personal Safety Training

4 p.m. – 5 p.m., Location: Gymnasium

Join UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� martial arts instructor Frank Sanchez to learn how to defend yourself. Dress in comfortable workout clothes and come ready to practice real-world self-defense. Please bring a hoodie or crew neck sweatshirt with you. This event is open to all who wish to attend.

Tuesday, Sept. 16

Campus Safety Forum

9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Location: SSTC-200

Join us for a moderated, panel discussion with campus PD, local law and fire agencies to discuss emergency response and safety topics. The following agencies will have representation: UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� Police, City of ��ѹ���һ�������� Police & Fire, McKinley County Sheriff & Fire, Metro Dispatch, and McKinley County Emergency Management. Student Activities will sponsor “Coffee with a Cop” during this event.

Campus Safety Walk

6:30 p.m., Location: Campus Police in Gurley Hall Commons

Join your fellow Lobos for the Campus Safety Walk to help make UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� a safer, healthier place. This is a great opportunity to get some steps in after dark with other Lobos. We’ll be counting on you to help identify areas in need of better lighting, pruning, and more. Sponsored by UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� Staff Council.

Wednesday, Sept. 17

Thursday, Sept. 18

Narcan & Hands Only CPR Training

9 a.m. – 10 a.m., Location: SSTC-200

Learn how to administer this simple nasal spray to help a person experiencing a drug overdose with training led by UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� EMS instructor Jacob LaCroix. You will also learn how to administer hands-only CPR and utilize campus AED machines. This event is open to all who wish to attend.

Safety Fair

10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Location: Gurley Hall Commons

Connect with local public safety agencies and learn about the resources they have to offer.

Friday, Sept. 19

Building Coordinator Training & Meeting

10:30 a.m. – Noon, Location: SSTC-200

Mandatory, annual training for Building Coordinators who are campus employees that work in regularly occupied campus buildings and serve to perform essential activities for the purpose of minimizing injury to campus students, staff, and faculty in the event of an emergency.

Hands Only CPR/AED & Narcan Training

Noon – 1 p.m., Location: SSTC-200

Learn how to administer hands-only CPR and utilize campus AED machines with training led by UNM-��ѹ���һ�������� EMS instructor Jacob LaCroix. You will also learn how to administer Narcan, a simple nasal spray to help a person experiencing a drug overdose. This event is open to all who wish to attend.
